Retro Thursday* (one day early)

I won't be able to post tomorrow so I thought I'd add one today.

Not sure when this one was from, but I know it was done in Painter so I probably just got the program and was doodling and I bet I used reference for the colours - at the very least.

*In an effort to post something once a week I'll be showing an image from the archives each Thursday.

Retro Thursday*

This was one of my early attempts at Painter. I used the palette knife tool a lot on this and wanted to get a more 'painterly' feel. It was for a Thunderdome contest at www.conceptart.org. I believe the symbol on his back means "Thunder."

Arcade game propaganda: Part X

The latest in the series. Just trying to keep them different from one another.

Retro Thursday*

These are from sometime around the turn of the millennium. I was eager to do any type of concept work and hooked up with a small company that wanted some art for a game. I quickly realized I wasn't cut out for concept art.

Frank Frazetta 1928 - 2010

You may not know the name, but you have definitely seen his work somewhere. Whether it be in comics, movie posters, album covers, movies, or book covers.

He was a major influence in my fantasy artwork and an influence to many others, I'm sure. I remember seeing the movie "Fire and Ice" when I was young and being fascinated by the images - not knowing who the conceptual artist was behind them. Frazetta is definitely one of the reasons I migrated towards illustration. His artwork is powerful and full of tension. He was able to capture a scene at just the right moment without making it look static.

I looked through a lot of his images to find a good one to place here and couldn't decide so I picked one at random (still a favourite). If you'd like to see an extensive online collection you can go here.

Arcade game propaganda: Part VIII and IX

No. 8 and 9 in the series of mock propaganda posters based on 1980s arcade games. This round has an "apparition" theme. The first is arguably the most popular arcade game, while the second is said to be one of the most difficult. I have three more of these posters planned. Prints of the second one are available here.

Retro Thursday*

Acrylic instead of digital this time. It was an idea that got stuck in my head so I decided to go traditional with it. I went straight into painting it without thinking too much about it. Circa 2003'ish. I call him Bucktooth.

Arcade game propaganda: Part VII

No. 7 in the series of mock propaganda posters based on 1980s arcade games. Trying some new colours, hopefully not overdoing the grungy/texture. By year's end I plan to have enough for a calendar. Only five more to go. Prints are available here.
